Artists at MIA Photo Fair 2024
Gian Paolo Barbieri – Unpublished works
The exhibition presents a highly innovative selection of photographs by Gian Paolo Barbieri, winner of the 2018 Lucie Award for Best International Photographer (Outstanding Achievement in Fashion). It is a style of photography that is at once ironic and sophisticated, both rare and provocative, rich with references to art history, eclectic outdoor sets. Internationally recognised for his trademark black and white shots, his subjects appear almost unattainable in their sharp sophistication.
Michel Haddi – Ironic and sensual photographs
On the occasion of MIA Photo Fair, 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS gallery will present nudes, unpublished shots, and brightly-coloured pictures packed with Nineties tropical American atmospheres. Haddi, which literally translates from the Semitic language as ‘the one who sees’, has succeeded in the difficult task of seeing, precisely, the true nature of the subjects who posed for him in front of his lens – actors, models, or ordinary people – and to replicate their image, at times ironically and at other profoundly: all his photographs have a story to tell because they are authentic pictures, which play with the most common human emotions and, precisely for this reason, become indelible.
Silvia Lelli – Kontakthof/Kontrapunkt
The selection of photographs by Silvia Lelli interprets Kontakthof, the only performance Pina Bausch – one of the most original and important choreographers in the world – choreographed in three versions. In a continuous dialogue between dance and theatre, Lelli’s photographs represent a testimony and offer various reflections on the evolution of a unique journey which, through the medium of dance photography, document movements and gestures.
“I entered into the repetition of steps, of gestures and expressions to try and recreate close-up, almost within touching distance of the dancers, an end result that would fully depict the dynamism and energy of the moment. There’s nothing more exciting than a choreography that’s relentlessly changing and pushing forward creativity ” – Silvia Lelli
Gabriele Micalizzi – The war as a theatre
On display powerful photographs taken in Afghanistan and other places of clashes such as Bangkok, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Donbass, and Gaza, focusing his work over the years on the analysis and representation of the social condition and the relationship of people with their surroundings, war, and migration. By using photography with impeccable skill, Micalizzi is able to create images that are not slaves of reality or intention but instead represent a world of its own with its coherence, autonomy and evocative power.
