THE UNSEEN THEATER BY LELLI E MASOTTI

On the occasion of the opening at Palazzo MALAGOLA of the exhibition entitled AMOREVOLMENTE PROGREDIRE, AMOREVOLMENTE REGREDENDO. La ricerca vocale di Demetrio Stratos 1970-1979, curated by the two co-directors of MALAGOLA, Enrico Pitozzi and Ermanna Montanari, in which the photos taken of Demetrio in 1977 by Silvia Lelli will be exhibited, and on the occasion of the opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 opera season at the Teatro della Scala, 29 ARTS IN PROGRESS is pleased to present the online exhibition by the duo that has made its mark on Italian photography.

The Unseen Theater is an exclusive selection of shots that reflect the heart of the cultural fabric of Milan through the eyes of Silvia Lelli and Roberto Masotti, the result of their long-standing collaboration with the Teatro della Scala.

The show offers a unique overview of the iconic theater, inviting viewers to dive deep into the enchanting world beyond the spotlight. The photographs therefore do not show the theater behind the scenes, but rather the world in front of and behind the curtain, beneath the stage boards, or even above the ceiling. A realm of invisible places, of spaces steeped in sound and silences, of intersecting perspectives and overlapping lights. Rather than the vociferous presence of the hall, the foyers, the stage, Lelli and Masotti highlight the corridors, the passages in muffled atmospheres, and those spaces in which the artists move, the only protagonists capable of filling the theater with magic.
